October 24-26, 2003 - The Feast at D-Bar-A

Article by Brian Rotermund, Troop Historian

Our annual feast outing is something we all look forward to.  Same as all the other years, the attendance was high, especially with the adults.

We set up camp in the field by the Trout Lake pavilion.  Because we had so many people camping and had a lot of cooking and activities planned we knew there would not be enough room in the area next to the Webelos' cabin.

Saturday morning was busy.  After waking up to a drizzly day, we had breakfast and began setting up the activities we would show to the visiting Cub Scouts.  Each patrol was responsible to set up and run a different activity.  We had rope making, fire starting with flint and steel, monkey bridge, branding and tomahawk throwing.

After lunch we all went to our activities and waited for the Cub Scout tours to begin.  About 30 Cubs came to our camp.  They had a tour of our campsite, saw how the adults cooked turkeys and pies in cardboard box ovens, and they each tried the activities we set up.

Later that night, we had a large feast and invited the Webelo II's to attend.  There was turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, corn, rolls, stew and a lot of pie!

Saturday night we made a huge campfire and put on skits for the troop and the Cub Scout packs.

It was fun, and we all look forward to doing it again next year.

Things started out a little soggy.

We camped at the Trout Lake activity field.

By the time we had flag raising, the rain had just about stopped.

To the Colors...

Ahh. The cooking begins!

Everyone pitches in to get the job done.

The chefs take a well deserved break.

Great job on those pies Mr. Hunsanger!

The Turkey Oven. It's amazing what you can do with a little tin foil and duct tape.

The turkeys have to hang just right so the bags don't touch the coals.

Yummm! They're coming along nicely.

Another view of the Turkey Oven.

Mr. J. fried up some venicin using his special Cajun (hot!!) seasoning.

Mr. Charron guards the ax yard. Nobody gets by his watchful eye.

Everyone waits their turn at the tomahawk throwing.

Mr. Zurowski shows us his underhand technique.

Scouts, Cubs, and Dads swap stories by the Monkey Bridge.

The cubs get a tour of our campsite.

Mr. Zurowski helps out with branding.

Parents watch the activities.

The time we've all been waiting for has arrived. Let's Eat!!!
